Three-Day Regional Volunteers Conference
The region’s first ever three-day Directors of Volunteer Services Volunteers Conference, ”Volunteering: A Capital Experience”, was a huge success! Kudos to the Council’s President of the Volunteers Division, Pam Fogan, CAVS, Suburban Hospital and the Conference Chair, Angela Young Stephens, MSW, CAVS, Howard University Hospital, and the entire volunteer conference committee for their untiring efforts to produce this top notch conference! The committee also has representatives from Washington Adventist Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital, Providence Hospital, HSC Pediatric Center, Washington Hospital Center, Children’s National Medical Center, Anne Arundel Medical Center, Holy Cross Hospital, National Institutes of Health, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital.
The conference was held at the Hilton Washington, DC/Silver Spring Hotel. Day 1 was action packed with an all day session, “Principles of Volunteer Management in A Changing Healthcare Environment”, presented by Sabrina Clark, CAVS, Learning Consultant, VA Learning University, Department of Veterans Affairs.
Not skipping a beat, the Welcome Reception that night featured great food and music by Frank Owens. Frank Owens is a musical director/accompanist for, to name a few, Johnny Mathis, Chubby Checker, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Ruth Brown, Connie Francis, Tony Award Winner Ann Duquesnay, Petula Clark and Lena Horne. Awesome! He accompanied Gregory Hines on the Boston Pops, is pianist for the annual “Christmas in Washington”, was music director for the early David Letterman show and on and on.
The conference “officially” began with an update on the Council and a welcome from the Council’s President & CEO Joseph Burns, an Invocation from Rev. Keith Byrd, Sr., Pastor, Zion Baptist Church; Reed Dewey, Director, Montgomery County Volunteer Center, stood in for Ike Legget, County Executive, and welcome comments by President, Volunteer Services Division Pam Fogan and Conference Chair Angela Young Stephens.
The conference featured nationally known speakers (Mary Ann Masur, Principal, Synergy Consultants, “If I Put One More Thing on My Plate, I’ll Drop It”) as well as a host of outstanding regional speakers and presenters.
The event sponsors held a special place in the conference brochure and received a “special thank you”, mentioned a number of times throughout the event. Here they are:

The Auxiliary of Howard University Hospital
